History of Bando Karate - Glastonbury CT

From Karate and Tai Chi in the early 70’s, to Bando and Kickboxing in the 80’s, to Cardio Kick-Boxing in the ninties,The Glastonbury Martial Arts Center has certainly seen all facets of the Martial Arts Experience. The non-profit Martial Arts Club, founded by Dr. Scherban in 1974, has enjoyed legendary success while staying true to the principles of its Chief Instructor (who still teaches every class). Commercialism (and the eventual compromising of principles and ideals that come from a school whose goal is to make money), has been forsaken by Dr. Scherban in his pursuit of teaching martial arts, self defense and helping people get into shape, both physically and mentally. Dr. Scherban, a tenured Professor emeritus at Central Connecticut University with a Ph.D. in Economics, has held true to his original aim of helping people help themselves through the wisdom and discipline of the Martial Arts. Dr. Scherban, who currently holds a 6th Level Ranking in Bando, a 2nd Level Animal Master in the Boar System of Bando, and a 6th Degree Black Belt in Karate, is a Certified Tai Chi Instructor (Hwa Yu Style).Dr Scherban  has trained thousands of Martial Arts practitioners in a teaching career that spans over 4 Decades! Dr. Scherban, who has been teaching Bando and Tai Chi in Glastonbury for the past 38 Years, has opened up the Martial Arts Experience to a new breed of practitioners with his aerobic training classes in Cardio Kickboxing™. While Bando (a very disciplined Martial Art from Burma with roots deeply ingrained in self defense) and Tai Chi (a soft, flowing form of meditative movement) have their followers, Dr. Scherban felt there was yet another group of people who could benefit from Maritial Arts Training; People whose needs would demand less of the Martial and Art, but still benefit from the Training. people, Dr. Scherban has developed Cardio Kickboxing™, a fun way to get into shape without the boredom of traditional Health Club workouts and the Spa Scene.

Tae-Do (cardio kickboxing) includes the excitement, and energy of a cardio workout with music, specialized core training, breath control, and weights to lose weight and sculpt problem areas that opnly a woman uderstands.

Therefore, all Tae-do classes are taught by certified aerobics/kickboxing instuctor MARIA ELENA de Espana.
